Dr. Ray Payne is a board-certified fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in Hip and Knee Joint Replacement Surgery. He is a highly experienced joint replacement surgeon having done thousands of Primary and Revision Hip and Knee Replacements in his 31 years of practice in Virginia Beach and South Hampton Roads. His Fellowship training in Hip and Knee Replacement surgery was done at one of the nations busiest and most renowned Joint Replacement Centers in the US, The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Raymond Payne has written a chapter in a book on Hip Replacement. Specializing in Sports Medicine & Joint Replacement, Dr. Payne is a Virginia native who graduate Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Richmond. He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia and then completed his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. While in Residency, he served as the Sports Medicine physician for the Dartmouth Sports Teams. He then pursued his passion in joint reconstruction by getting additional training in an orthopaedic fellowship in total joint replacement at one of the nation’s leading joint replacement centers, the Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University.

His expertise is in the prevention and treatment of joint disorders. He specializes in total joint replacement of the Hip and Knee. He also has an interest in sports medicine and minimally invasive arthroscopic surgical techniques. He has a unique interest in minimally invasive muscle sparing approaches to the knee and hip. He performs the Quadriceps sparing approach to the knee and the popular “Jiffy Hip” using a muscle sparing direct anterior approach to the hip.

He practices at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital where he is Director of The Center for Joint Replacement and Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and is an active member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Dr. Payne has also published in several peer reviewed text books on total joint replacement.

Dr. Payne enjoys traveling, boating, deep sea fishing, scuba diving, golfing and hanging on the beach with friends when he is not caring for his patients.
